The Royal College of Music is one of the world’s great conservatoires, providing specialised musical education and professional training at the highest international level for performers and composers.
Founded in 1882 by HRH the Prince of Wales, the Royal College of Music has been welcoming, training and nurturing the musicians of the future for more than 130 years. The College has 840 students from more than 60 countries studying at undergraduate, masters or doctoral level, within an environment that simulates innovation and research.
The Royal College of Music seeks a highly motivated and experienced fundraiser to be appointed as their new Head of Major Gifts. The post-holder will be responsible for maximising the College’s income from high-net-worth individuals, as well as creating the strategy for raising income from charitable trusts and statutory grant programmes.
This is an exceptional time to join a highly successful and energetic Development and Alumni Engagement team at the Royal College of Music as they embark on the next phase of the More Music: Reimagining the Royal College of Music campaign. With over 70% of the target raised, this is truly a once-in-a generation opportunity to transform the College’s facilities and invest in innovation.
The Head of Major Gifts will work closely with the senior management team to maximise the impact of the Royal College of Music’s relationships with donors and alumni through the creation and implementation of strategies that build appropriate and lasting relationships at all levels. Reporting to the Director of Development & Alumni Engagement and with three direct reports, s/he will set budgets and stretch team KPIs, oversee international fundraising and ensure a high level of service delivery to alumni and donors. The post-holder will manage a personal portfolio of high level individual and trust relationships for the Royal College of Music, with a personal income target of £1.5 million per year.
The successful candidate will be a graduate, and have significant fundraising experience, with a track record of soliciting six figure gifts and identifying and maintaining external relationships with high-net-worth individuals. S/he will have experience of managing a small team as well as experience of budgeting, and setting and monitoring KPIs.
The Head of Major Gifts will have a systematic and enthusiastic approach to fundraising, with excellent attention to detail. S/he will have strong networking and relationship building skills and be confident, authoritative and socially at ease. The post-holder will be articulate and persuasive, both orally and in writing, have a strong commitment to team-work, as well as a desire to immerse themselves in the work and culture of the Royal College of Music.
Experience of working in a university or arts fundraising team and understanding of the funding environment and climate of Higher Education is desirable, as is an appreciation of the arts and classical music.
The role is based in South Kensington in London.
